Acid Reflux or Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) is caused by the stomach acid rise towards the esophagus and cause pain in the solar plexus or a burning sensation in the chest.

The cause of acid reflux (GERD) is the proper functioning of the lower esophageal sphincter (LES). LES is a circle of muscle at the bottom of the esophagus. LES serves as the automatic door opens when food or drink down to the stomach. After the food came in, the LES will be shut down to prevent the existing food and acid in the stomach so as not to move up into the esophagus. If not, LES became loose and don’t close properly, the stomach acid can get out of the stomach and cause acid reflux.

The cause of acid reflux is usually associated with a factor of overweight, pregnant, a hiatal hernia, or consumption of foods containing a lot of fat.

Symptoms of GERD are perceived is burning sensation in the chest or heartburn. As a result, we would feel uncomfortable after eating food, we also experience pain and difficulty when swallowing food.

  • Lose weight.
  • Eat in small portions, but more often.
  • Don’t lie down immediately after eating.
  • Avoid chocolate, tomatoes, fatty foods, and spicy.
  • Avoid drinking coffee.
  • Sleeping with a pillow that is a bit high to prevent rising stomach acid when lying.
  • Avoid wearing clothes that are too tight.

Drugs to cure acid reflux or GERD:

Antacid, Antacid can be bought at the pharmacy directly. Antasida functions to neutralize acid reflux. Not recommended to be consumed simultaneously with other medications because it can have an impact on the rate of absorption of other drugs. These drugs also can relieve the pain of peptic ulcers.

Alginate or alginic acid, these drugs are consumed right after eating. Alginate serves to protect the walls of the stomach and the esophagus or throat irritation from excessive acid reflux. These drugs can be bought directly at a pharmacy without a prescription.

H2-receptor antagonist (H2RA), these drugs reduce acid reflux by way of inhibiting the effects of histamine. Histamine required the body to produce gastric acid. Examples of H2RA medication are ranitidine and nizatidine. The purchase of these drugs usually needs a doctor’s prescription.

Proton-pump Inhibitors (PPI), this medication works to reduce acid production in the stomach. This drug rarely gives a heavy side effects. If any exist, conditions are not too severe and can be constipation, dizziness, and diarrhea. An example of a PPI drug is omeprazole, lansoprazole, and esomeprazole. This medicine usually requires a prescription from a doctor.

Prokinetic, this drug functions accelerate the process of emptying the stomach. This means food and acid reflux will more quickly get into the intestine so as to reduce the chance of acid reflux up into the esophagus. This medication is not recommended for use by persons aged under 20 years due to potential side effects. An example of prokinetic drug are domperidone and Bethanechol. These drugs generally require a prescription.

Treatment of acid reflux or GERD

Treatment of acid reflux has stages. The easiest thing to do is to replace the food menu, i.e. switch to menu foods low in fat and nutritious. But when the dietary changes didn’t work, drugs will be used to relieve the symptoms felt.

If the steps that have been undertaken treatment still does not work, surgery may be necessary to cope with GERD. For patients who experience disease recurrence of acid reflux, may be given a dose of the drug in the long term.
